Coffee Flan is a rich and decadent dessert that combines the smooth, creamy texture of traditional flan with the bold flavor of coffee. This delightful variation is perfect for coffee lovers, bringing an elegant twist to the classic custard. The flan is infused with freshly brewed coffee, creating a luscious dessert that’s both sweet and slightly bitter, making it a sophisticated end to any meal.
The caramel topping adds a touch of sweetness and a beautiful golden hue to the dish, contrasting perfectly with the coffee-flavored custard. This flan is baked in a water bath, which helps to maintain its creamy texture, preventing it from curdling. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or simply want to indulge in a delicious treat, this Coffee Flan is sure to impress.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 1 cup brewed coffee (cooled)
- 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a flan mold or baking dish by placing it aside for later use. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring and allow it to boil until it turns a deep amber color, about 10 minutes. Carefully pour the caramel into the mold, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the brewed coffee, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined and smooth. For an extra silky texture, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove any lumps.
- Pour the coffee mixture into the prepared caramel-coated mold. Place the mold in a large baking pan and fill the pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold. This water bath will help the flan cook evenly and prevent it from cracking.
- Bake the flan in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Keep an eye on the water level in the baking pan; you may need to add more hot water during baking to maintain the level.
- Once baked, remove the flan from the oven and the water bath, and let it cool to room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set completely.
- To serve, carefully run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it from the mold. Invert the flan onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the top. Slice and enjoy your delicious Coffee Flan!
Extra Tips:
To enhance the coffee flavor, consider using espresso or strong brewed coffee. You can also add a tablespoon of coffee liqueur to the custard mixture for an adult twist. For added presentation, garnish the flan with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. This dessert pairs wonderfully with a cup of coffee or as a sweet ending to a dinner party.
